AN indigenous energy firm, Techno Gas and Power, has sealed an agreement with a Bulgerian firm, Incotex to manufacture standard pre-paid meters to meet the needs of millions of electricity consumers in Nigeria.
The Managing Director, Techno Gas and Power, Collins Onyeama, who disclosed this in a chart with journalists in Lagos, said the company made commitment to fill the huge metering gap in the country with new prepaid meter technology.
Techno gas and power, a subsidiary of Techno Oil, was among the few successful companies that were licenced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), to manufacture metering facilities in Nigeria through the Credit Advance Payment for Metering Implementation (CAPMI) scheme.
Onyeama said the new metering technology to be introduced into Nigerian market has some special features to tackle energy theft and promote energy conservation.
“The planned Techno Gas and Power meters would bring succour to Nigerian investors because they are tamper proof and so the practice of many consumers to bypass maters and connect directly would be a thing of the past. The meters would read even when it has been bypassed by the customer and at a very low voltage thus saving energy,” he said.
He stressed that, “the partnership therefore became necessary to urgently address the vacuum created by the inability of the erstwhile Power Holding Company of Nigeria to provide meters where they are needed.
“We are all aware of the discomfort suffered by millions of electricity consumers nationwide, who are unable to get electricity meters.
“I can now assure Nigerians that the era of estimated billing will soon be over with the decision of Techno Gas and Power to embark on mass production of meters in partnership with Incotex,” he said.
The companies, according to him, have had talks with electricity distribution companies in Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja and Lagos, to launch the new technology.
The Representative of Incotex, Steve Muckett, assured that the partnership would significantly boost the electricity sector through adequate metering.
He expressed confidence about quality of the product, adding that it would meet the variety of requirements by the 11 electricity Discos in Nigeria.
