Shaibu Amodu will successfully qualify Nigeria for Afcon; James Peters

The NFF assistant technical director has backed the newly appointed senior national team coach to successfully take the Super Eagles to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

James Peters, an assistant technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation, has told Goal, that newly appointed caretaker coach, Shaibu Amodu is capable of successfully leading the Super Eagles ahead of their remaining 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches.

The NFF-led by Amaju Pinnick appointed Amodu on Thursday to temporarily take charge of the Super Eagles for the next two games of the qualifiers against Congo and South Africa after Stephen Keshi and his assistants were dismissed.
Peter, who during the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil blasted Keshi over his arrogance and his refusal of technical support from the NFF, blamed the decline recorded by the Super Eagles on the dismissed coaches' 'personal issues' with players.

He said that the appointment of Amodu, who is the technical director of the NFF, is in line with the best practice around the world and applauded the swift move of the NFF to rescue the team from crashing.

"[Keshi's sack] is a welcome development. The NFF made the right move as our team began to go down the drain because of some personal issues with the coaching. The players will have a new lease of life to play their hearts out for the country,” Peters told Goal.

"Let me tell you something about coaching, first of all, coaching is about firing and hiring. You hire when you are doing well and when you do well they will keep you.

"Shaibu and I are both technical directors - we are supposed to be stand-in coaches for any of the national teams. When there is a problem with any national team, we ought to step in and hold brief until a coach is appointed.

"That's why we are coaches and technical directors. It's not a new thing, it is done anywhere in the world. For those asking why Shaibu should be appointed, they are just making fun of themselves,” he noted.

Peters is optimistic coach Amodu will secure qualification for Nigeria to the 2015 tournament where the Super Eagles are expected to defend their title won in South Africa if he is given a free hand to invite players.

"These players we are calling are professional players. They are not local players from the village. They have been playing in Europe and there all over the place. Three days is enough for them to understand and be prepared for games," Peters said.

"When you call them, they must play and we will win if Shaibu is given the players he wants, he will qualify the team. They train day-in and day-out for their clubs," he concluded.

Nigeria sit in third spot with four points from four games - behind South Africa and Congo that are placed first and second with eight and seven points respectively.

The African champions face an uphill task with two crucial games left to play. They will travel to Pointe Noire to face Congo before welcoming South Africa to Uyo next month.
