Senate urges Discos to justify dividend of privatization

THE Senate Committee on Privatization has challenged electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) to deliver effective service delivery to Nigerians adding that such would be the only justify the essence of federal government privatization system.
The senate is also advocating federal government urgent attention on rural electrification.
Chairman of the committee Senator Olugbenga Obadara who spoke in Kano Wednesday during the committee oversight function to Kano electricity distribution company posited that the privatization of power sector most guarantee sufficient relieve to Nigerians, having endured ugly period of total failure of the power sector.
Although Senator Obadara who maintained that comprehensive implementation of the privatization of power sector may take time to advance noted that the senate will committed to ensure smooth transition of the sector.
He said the committee was KEDCO headquarters in Kano as part of the committee’s oversight responsibility to ascertain the functionality of the company after taken full responsibility of electricity distribution to consumers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa.
Obadara said: “We are satisfy on the progress made so far on the privatization process although we are aware the transition is a gradual process. The committee has visited all the electricity distribution companies and the control center at Oshogbo to clarify issues and obtain first hand Information about the capacity of the company to manage what is on ground.
“We most assure Nigerians that the senate is committed to ensure privatization of power sector deliver sufficiently dividend of democracy. The companies most deliver their entrusted responsibility just as we will continue to encourage customers too to cooperate with the electricity providers. Customers most pay their bill because that will only keep the wheel of the company rolling.”
Managing director Kano electricity distribution company (KEDCO) Alhaji Jamilu Gwamna revealed the company is still facing challenges of low allocation from the generation but pledged to invest on alternative energy generation to meet customers demands.
