Monarchs urge states to replicate FG’s agric transformation agenda


Traditional rulers in Nigeria have called on state governments to replicate Federal Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda in their various states to enhance productivity in the sector.

This was contained in a statement issued during the just concluded seventh National Development Summit of Traditional Rulers.
The statement signed by Prof. Laz Ekwueme, General Secretary of the summit stressed the need for state governments to modernise the agriculture sector.

It said the summit urged state governments to transform the sector to become lucrative and dignifying to encourage Nigerian youths participate in it.

The monarchs also urged state governments to step up efforts at improving infrastructure for effective transformation of the sector.

According to them, the efforts included the provision of functional agro-storage and processing facilities as well as access to energy.

The summit, the statement said, advocated the need to promote mandatory programmes on entrepreneurship in tertiary institutions to boost economic growth and development.

On security, the traditional rulers called on retired military officers to join the Federal Government in the fight against insurgency.

They contended that their expertise was relevant in tackling the insurgents. They also commended the efforts of the government in combating the spread of the Ebola virus.

The statement said the summit among other issues, recommended the need for the appointment of a Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs to the President.

According to the monarchs, the appointment will promote “effective and a healthier relationship” between the government and traditional rulers in the country.”
