Lagos state launches improved ‘Energy Calculator Mobile App’

by Jewel Stephen

Over the weekend, the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through its implementing agency, Lagos State Electricity Board [LSEB] launched the improved version of its mobile app, the Lagos Energy Calculator. This version of the mobile app has been improved based on feedback from an earlier soft launch in June with a group of developers and app testers.Despite the limited electricity supply to Lagos from the national grid, in 2013 less than one per cent of the 20 million residents of Lagos reportedly practised any form of energy conservation. Lagos Energy Calculator App is the first consumer-focused application in Africa, designed to help consumers closely estimate the amount of energy they consume and then take steps to conserve energy and reduce wastage.

This calculator remains a critical component of the Energy Conservation initiative by the Lagos State Government to increase energy awareness and conservation in Lagos. October has been declared the annual energy conservation month in Lagos.

The event took place at the Co-Creation Hub [CC Hub] in Yaba, with many vibrant and industrious young men and ladies in attendance. Many of who commended the idea and suggested innovative ways to which the app could be put to use to further benefit Lagosians.

The day wasn’t complete without some participants going home with some prizes following a session of Lagos Energy Teaser Quiz, some of the items for grabs include; A 2kv Inverter, Solar Energy Lamps, CESM Gas Cylinders and Energy saving bulbs.

The app was researched specifically for Lagos and is a synergy between technology and energy. The Lagos energy calculator is FREE and available for download on the iTunes, blackberry and android stores.

Please visit www.lseb.gov.ng/app to download the app

Below are a few pointers to getting the app.

Input your location on the opening page and click start, answer the questionnaire and click the result button to receive your “Estimated Monthly Household Energy Usage, Estimated Monthly Electricity Bill in Naira and your Estimated Monthly Carbon Emission.” This shows you what ways you can benefit from conserving energy to save money within your household.

This app is unique because it was designed following an energy audit in Lagos; it therefore takes into considerations the uniqueness of the power situation in the state.
