The Lagos state government has announced a N50 million donation to First Consultant Medical Centre, Obalende, the hospital where the index case of the Ebola virus disease in Nigeria, Patrick Sawyer, was admitted and treated.
It was also announced that the affected persons and survivors of the Ebola virus outbreak in Nigeria would be given financial support by the state government.
The information was disseminated on Monday, 20 October, by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, at a joint media conference in Alausa, Ikeja.
Idris said it was pertinent to address the economic consequences of the virus, and as such, the gesture of goodwill became necessary by the state government.
“Having addressed the human angle in containing the outbreak, there is now the need to address the economic consequences. Under consideration are the following: Support to the affected persons including those alive and N50 million lump sum as business support gesture to the First Consultant Medical Centre,” he said.
Idris added the financial support was meant to help get the hospital back in business and running efficiently.
“This is with view to getting the people/businesses back on their feet and for businesses to re-secure patronage of their customers. It needs clearly be stated that this is not an attempt at compensation but a gesture of goodwill on the part of government.”
