Social media is expanding substantially nowadays, and brands have to keep up with this fast growth by creatively developing new methods every now and then. Creating a Facebook page is not enough anymore, especially since people are now moving away from “liking” pages unless there is a clear benefit. Having said that, getting engaging fans on Facebook nowadays is becoming harder and harder by the minute.
Here are 10 ways that can help to obtain and maintain engaging fans:

Don’t depend entirely on Facebook ads

Getting fans (likes) through Facebook advertising isn’t remotely enough anymore. Despite the fact that most of the fans a page gets through Facebook advertising are worse than useless – as I established in the case study prepared earlier – sometimes brands need to build a fan base using this method, which is okay, but they cannot depend entirely on it because this will decrease overall engagement and basically they will be wasting money. There has to be something on the side of Facebook advertising to assure getting fans organically.

Online activation is the way to go.

Contest, games or any kind of good online activation can be considered as the most effective ways to get Facebook fans organically. Nowadays, all of the big brands are realizing that getting likes through Facebook advertising doesn’t achieve the engagement they are seeking, that’s why Facebook online activation is getting more and more popular by the second. Launching a brand-related game or contest is one of the most effective ways to increase Facebook engagement.

Don’t post more than twice a day

As I established in my previous article ‘’7 common mistakes social media officers are making’’, posting more than once or twice a day tends to annoy fans on Facebook and drive them to unlike your brand’s page. Getting in touch with friends and family is the main reason behind using Facebook, not to follow brand’s news and updates. So brands should keep it simple when posting on Facebook so they don’t annoy fans, drive the away and eventually lose them.

Promote highlighted posts

Facebook doesn’t let all of pages’ posts reach all fans, instead they distribute posts to a small number of fans more like a focus group to check if the post is interesting enough, and if they engage by liking commenting or sharing, Facebook distributes the post to more fans. That way, Facebook guarantees that most of the posts are interesting enough that they don't annoy people on Facebook. Because of that, you need to promote highlighted posts e.g. launch campaigns or special offers. By doing that occasionally, you guarantee that posts will be distributed to almost all of your fans and their friends in a fast and effective way.

Post interesting things related to your brand

Whether you’re running a business that sells shoes, tools or any kind of products or services, you don’t have to post about your products every single time. Doing so will make your fans lose interest in what you’re going to post next. Try to post some interesting articles or videos around your brand field, that will make people interact with your posts more.

Motivate people to like, comment, share or reply

As mentioned above, when fans interact with your posts by liking, commenting or sharing, Facebook will distribute the same post to more of your followers. Try to interest people to engage with your posts like asking questions or ask for opinions, you can also post cool or funny pictures to interest people to share it, all of that will lead to more engagement.

Make a strong presence in special days

Always make sure to be there for your fans on holidays, and I’m not only talking about Christmas, Eid, Ramadan, Thanksgiving …etc., but also on days like tree day, palm Sunday and all of those small occasions. This will increase overall engagement with you page posts.

Time it perfectly

There are many applications that are more than useful telling you when to post and help making better future decisions. This feature may be more applicable to twitter, but it can be useful on Facebook as well. Give it a try and you’ll notice the difference.

Always use images, try to avoid sharing links if possible

Similar to Twitter, posts with images get more engagement than posts that lack of images. Although the new Facebook design allows attaching the image of the shared link in the same size as a shared image, but still, sharing an image is way more effective than links for the reason that most of the time the article image is not as clear as the shared image.

Upload videos

Don't share Youtube videos, because you can't track them and they won't be connected to your page after the second share. Try to always upload videos to your page so when poeple share it on Facebook, your page name ''brand name'' stays attached to the video, hence, more possible likes.
