Lawmaker wants CBN to reverse N65 ATM charge

Mr Kamil Oyedele, Chairman of Osun state House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation, on Wednesday urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reverse the N65 ATM charges.

Oyedele told NAN in Osogbo that the re-introduction of Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) charge would bring more economic burden to the masses.

The legislator described the amount as exploitative and uncalled for. CBN had penultimate Monday introduced a charge of N65 to be paid by bank customers when they use the ATM of third party banks.

A charge of N100 for ATM withdrawals was scrapped by the former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to reduce human traffic in banking halls.

The lawmaker said the decision to charge customers N65 on their withdrawal would amount to denying customers of their hard earned money.

Oyedele pointed out that with the introduction of the cashless policy by the CBN, there was no need for the apex bank to re-introduce the new charge.

“It will be better if the CBN can reverse this decision. This charge in my view is another way to worsen the plight of the masses.

“This new charge has made the queues at different ATM outlets become unbearable since we cannot withdraw more than three times from other banks without being charged,” he said.

Oyedele, however, urged the CBN to reverse the policy in the interest of the masses and success of the cashless policy.
