NUPENG strike: Fuel scarcity worsens in Warri

By Egufe Yafugborhi

THE effect of the strike embarked upon by the Warri Zone of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, since last week, continued to bite harder on residents of Warri and environs as all petrol stations were closed to business yesterday.

The scarcity unsettled motorists and other fuel users who had lost directions as to where to refuel their vehicles and power generators.

The situation got critical yesterday as staff of a filling station in Warri beat up a NUPENG official, Israel Udumebraye, who led a monitoring group of the union to stop sale of fuel at the filling station.

Trouble started when the NUPENG group met the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, franchise filling station along Airport Road dispensing products in defiance of NUPENG’s order for all members to join the strike over the union’s disagreement with Chevron Nigerian Limited.

Udumebraye, whose clothes were torn following his molestation, said in an attempt to explain their mission to the fuel station staff, the manager in charge ordered the staff to deal with anyone involved in thwarting their business for the day.

It was gathered that the development would have deteriorated but for the quick intervention by military personnel in the neighbourhood.
