Ebola: Be cautious in handling patients, NAUTH boss advises medics

By Chimaobi Nwaiwu

Nnewi—Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi, Professor Anthony Igwegbe, has advised healthcare workers in Nigeria to adopt standard universal precaution in handling affected and unaffected Ebola Virus Disease patients.

Professor Igwegbe, who gave the advice during a one-day sensitisation programme on Ebola Virus Disease for health workers in the institution, said the advice became necessary because health sector workers in the country had taken a lot of things for granted, thus throwing to the dust the practice of universal precaution.

“Health workers need to change attitude and learn to imbibe the practice of universal precaution to reduce exporting and transporting of diseases to their homes from the hospitals and other health facilities.

“The sensitisation seminar is about facts and fallacies of Ebola disease, it will continue because NAUTH will not like to suffer any loss of worker, neither will it entertain absenteeism because they are afraid of being infected with the disease,” said Igwegbe, who was represented by chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of NAUTH, Dr. Evaristus Afiadigwe.
