VC asks scholars to join search for solution to insecurity

  Written by Isa Sa’idu, Zaria

Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, yesterday urged scholars to actively participate in the search for a solution to the current security in the country.

Speaking at the 30th annual conference of the Social Studies and Civic Educators Association of Nigeria (SOSCEAN) Prof Mustapha said the corporate existence of the country is under serious threat, hence the need for scholars to come to the rescue.

“Scholars should provide appropriate strategies that can empower the youth so that they become self-reliant and play their proper roles as mature patriotic citizens for the development of Nigeria,” he said.

Former Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Rufa’i said different countries use Social Studies to solve their problems. “For example, in Serra-Leone, it was used to improve the image of people in the society after colonial heritage. In Ghana, to learn ways of improving economy, in Ethiopia, to transform the political culture, while in Nigeria, to inculcate co-operation, interdependence, nationalism and national unity,” she said.

The Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof Tijjani Abubakar, said, “Nigeria is experiencing a serious decay and dilapidation in social and economic institutions where the family institution is seriously disintegrating and respect for elders has vanished. This can only be tackled through social studies and civic education.”
